Emergency situation resolved quickly and efficiently

The Requirement

Early one Monday morning we received a desperate call for help. A server had failed preventing any usefully work. The entire resource of the current support was not available. The client needed normal working restored as quickly as possible.

 Action

An engineer was dispatched immediately. Upon arrival a failed hard disk was quickly diagnosed. It was also discovered the server had been specified with just a single disk instead of the essential RAID array (where if one disk fails other members of the array maintain an uninterrupted service). The disk was damaged beyond recovery but a replacement could not be sourced immediately. The situation was further complicated because the backup was held on a NAS (Network Attached Storage) device that was only easily accessible from the working server.

We soon overcame this problem and could then access the backup. An entire rebuild of the domain was now started from scratch onto a different style of hard drive that was also compatible with the server. By Tuesday evening we had a working system up and running. By Friday every aspect of the system had restored to its original state.

However the server was still vulnerable because of the overall poor quality of the original specification and only the single replaced hard disk. The decision to replace this server was very rapidly taken. We immediately set about the task of sourcing a suitable server and transferring the newly reconstituted domain onto it. This was achieved without further downtime and it left the old server entirely unaltered (ensuring a very rapid failsafe option)

During the time that the new system was being constructed we took especial care to ensure that the old system stayed functional.
