VoIP
WHAT IT MEANS AND ITS VALUE TO YOUR BUSINESS

VoIP  -  Voice over IP.

In other words talking over the Internet using a telephone. Of course the same TCP/IP network protocol that drives the Internet is used for your own local area network of computers. Therefore VoIP can be used for distributing voice messages around your office too.

The first characteristic of VoIP that springs into most people's mind is "free" telephone calls (free in the sense that it costs no more once you have a paid for Broadband connection). This can be true; but only in very rare instances. The real value of VoIP to smaller organisations is the low cost functionality it offers.

Low cost VoIP systems can have all the features of complex and expensive conventional PBXs. This can add very real value to even small businesses. It can be especial effective for remote workers where their telephone extension is simply a node on the network. So they can use the phone, with all its features, as though they were sitting in the main office

"Free" telephone calls using VoIP is a possibility (Skype for instance), realistically though for business this is just not practical. However VoIP can drastically reduce phone bills where any external calls are routed to a service provider. These calls are then transferred using the Internet and feed into the conventional public switched system at the exchange local to the destination. Therefore there is only a local charge to pay.

Another advantage of using a full VoIP system is that your telephone number becomes non-geographic. Using the conventional public switched network to call you is the reverse process to calling out. The incoming call goes to the service provider and it is then routed to your network. So where ever you move your service provider can always direct your incoming calls to you.
